Iron, Protein and Hydration: Eating Well in the Third Trimester

Simple, Hyderabad-friendly food ideas to support baby’s growth, keep energy up and reduce anaemia in the last 12 weeks of pregnancy.

What the last twelve weeks need

Baby’s brain, fat stores and iron reserves grow quickly now. You do not need to “eat for two” in quantity, but you do need regular meals with iron, protein, calcium and enough fluids — especially in Hyderabad heat.

Anaemia is common in the third trimester and makes fatigue, dizziness and delivery recovery harder. Your antenatal blood tests guide whether you need extra iron.

Build a simple plate

At each main meal try:

  • A palm-sized protein: dal, sprouts, egg, fish, chicken, paneer or curd
  • A fist of cooked cereal or rice / roti — not two large servings if you have GDM
  • Half the plate vegetables or salad
  • A fruit between meals rather than biscuits and packaged juice

Iron-friendly ideas

  • Rajma, chana, ragi, greens, jaggery in small amounts
  • Have iron tablets as prescribed; take them with lemon water, not tea
  • Tea and coffee away from meals so they do not block iron absorption

Hydration, swelling and heartburn

Sip water through the day. Sudden swelling of the face or hands, severe headache or reduced baby movements is not “just water retention” — call your obstetrician.

For heartburn: smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and raise the head of the bed. Ask before taking over-the-counter antacids.

When to see the dietitian

Gestational diabetes, twins, vegetarian diets with low protein, or haemoglobin that is not rising all benefit from a Paramitha nutrition consult. Ask at your antenatal visit — diet counselling is available across our Hyderabad branches.
