When Your Child Has a Fever: Home Care vs When to Come In

Fever is common in children. Learn what you can manage at home, red-flag signs, and when to visit a Paramitha paediatrician or emergency.

Fever is a symptom, not a diagnosis

Fever means the body is responding to infection. In children it is often viral and settles in 2–3 days. What matters is the child’s age, how they look between fever spikes, and whether there are danger signs.

What you can do at home

  • Dress the child in light clothes and keep the room comfortable
  • Offer frequent sips of water, ORS, milk or breastfeeds
  • Use paracetamol in the dose your paediatrician has advised — never guess adult doses
  • Recheck temperature after 30–60 minutes if the child still looks unwell

A child who is drinking, passing urine, and playing a little between fevers can often be watched at home with a same-day or next-day clinic visit.

Red flags — come in the same day

Bring your child to Paramitha paediatrics or emergency if they have:

  • Age under 3 months with any fever
  • Difficulty breathing, chest indrawing, or blue lips
  • Extreme lethargy, not waking for feeds, or a stiff neck
  • A rash that does not fade when pressed
  • Persistent vomiting, no urine for 8 hours, or a seizure
  • Fever lasting more than 3 days, or returning after a gap

Monsoon and dengue season

In Hyderabad’s monsoon months, dengue, viral fever and stomach infections increase. Do not give aspirin. If fever comes with severe body pain, bleeding gums, or sudden worsening on day 3–5, seek care promptly for blood tests.
